Cody at the Crossrhodes
So word is leaking out that former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes made quite a splash at PWG's Battle of Los Angeles tonight, and this writer couldn't be happier.
You see, we are all in charge of our own destinies, and Cody made the conscious decision not to let someone else call the shots for his life, and when you really think about it, isn't that what being an Indy wrestler is all about? Sure, you have to answer to the promoters, who decide who they're going push during any given show, just like a director directs his actors, but there is an enormous amount of freedom in being able to call the shots.
At some point in your life you find yourself at a crossroad where you're going to either continue to do the same thing day in and day out, or if you're going to mix things up and do things different. That goes for every performer and every promoter on the indy circuit. It also applies to the talent that wrestle in front of tens of thousands of people. At what point do you say you've taken this gravy train as far as you can go, or do you say "Life's too short, and there are other things that matter?"
That being said, let's go back to my older blog post about that you don't have to suffer being an Indy worker. There's a point in time when you have to get past the romantic part of the journey and say, "Um, I'd like to have a wife and kids someday," or "Hm. How long can I really keep putting on the tights?" What am I sacrificing? What really matters?
As much as I love the sport, I'm here to say that you come first. Putting a roof over your head and putting food in your mouth and making sure that your loved ones are being taken care of is far more important than stepping in a ring. It's far more important than being blessed by Vinny Mac, and is far more important than how you rank in an arbitrary poll.
At some point, you may decide to stop waiting by the phone to hear from Vince. What then? What will you decide? Will you diversify or will you continue to be a one-trick pony?
Cody did what was best for him. What will you do that is best for you?
